Shampoo (1-2 times a week)
Shampooing your hair is essential to cleanse it from oil, dirt, and product buildup. However, over-washing can strip your hair of its natural oils, so I aim to shampoo 1-2 times a week.
Conditioning (every wash)
Conditioning is crucial in keeping your hair hydrated and can help prevent it from becoming dry and brittle. After shampooing, I apply a generous amount of conditioner, focusing on the ends of my hair and leaving it on for a few minutes before washing.
For extra hydration, I use a deep conditioning treatment once a week to help repair and restore natural moisture balance.
Leave-In Conditioner (as needed)
After washing and conditioning, I apply a leave-in conditioner or serum to damp hair. This helps provide additional moisture, protection from heat styling, and help in managing frizz.
Avoiding Heat Styling (as much as possible)
While I occasionally use heat styling, constant use of flat irons, curling wands, and blow dryers can be damaging to your hair over time. I try to air-dry my hair whenever possible, and if I use heat tools, I always apply a heat protectant.
Heat-free styling methods like heatless curls, braids, twists, or natural air drying can give your hair a break from heat.
Scalp Care
Maintaining scalp care is the foundation for healthy hair growth. While washing, I gently massage my scalp to stimulate circulation. Using scalp treatments like oils or masks also helps nourish and balance the scalp.
Try tea tree oil, peppermint oil, or a mild scalp scrub if you have dandruff or buildup on your scalp.
Protecting Hair While Sleeping
Hair can get tangled, frizzy, and damaged from friction while sleeping so I use a silk or satin pillowcase to minimize hair breakage.
Eating a Balanced Diet and Staying Hydrated
Healthy hair starts from the inside out. I try to maintain a well-balanced diet that includes leafy greens, nuts, seeds and fish, getting plenty of vitamins and minerals through meals or supplements. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water helps keep your hair hydrated too. I aim to drink at least 8 or more cups of water daily.
A simple haircare routine doesn’t have to take up a lot of time. Keep it simple, and your hair will thank you!
