Here’s what we did, loved and what you can add to your itinerary if you’re dreaming of a getaway that blends adventure, nature, culture, quietness and real family connection.
Exploring Hawaii’s Black Sand Beach
This beach was unforgettable. It was like walking on powdered lava. These beaches are formed when hot lava from volcanoes flows into the ocean, instantly cools and shatters into tiny pieces that become sand. Sounds pretty cool but much warmer on your feet! It was super fun to explore with kids.

Spending the Day at Kua Bay
Kua Bay is one of the Big Island’s most beautiful and family-friendly beach destinations. Kua Bay is known for its crystal-clear blue water. The beautiful white sand, safe & calm conditions met with tropical fish was the perfect way to spend the day.

A Magical Visit to Rainbow Falls
Rainbow falls is located in Hilo and is a must-stop for a big island family adventure. Not only was the waterfall breathtakingly picture-perfect, it was a perfect stop for enjoying a quiet rainforest picnic and nice short hike surrounded by beautiful lush greenery.

A Taste of Hilo at Hilo’s Farmers Market
We stopped at Hilo’s Farmers Market after our trip to Rainbow Fall for some fresh eats. Hilo’s Farmers Market is perfect for families and foodies offering tropical fruits, plants, local crafts, food and friendly vendors. It’s a must-do stop in Hilo.

Exploring Kaumana Caves
Located just outside Hilo, were the Kaumana Caves. This was our first time exploring caves and a hidden gem for us. There’s a staircase leading down from a park, and you can explore caves on either side. It was an exciting and spooky (in the best way) family experience.

Hiking at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Surrounded by lush rainforest and beautiful greenery, our day of hiking at Hawaii’s Volcanoes National Park felt like we were walking on another planet. We were truly in awe of the surreal landscape, steam vents, and lava cracks. We could feel the power of nature, history and fire as we stood at the rim of the Kīlauea crater. It was an iconic experience.

We wrapped up our hike with comforting Thai food at Aunty Pon’s Thai Food Truck in Volcano Village just minutes from the park. We were greeted with friendly service and treated with big, delicious portions perfect for post-hike hunger.

A Family Beach Day at Hapuna Beach
Hapuna Beach is known as one of the most beautiful and family-friendly beaches in Hawaii. We spent the day catching waves and soaking up the sunshine. We returned to experience Hapuna’s Famous Golden Hour and captured some great family photos during the golden Kona Coast sunset glow.

Mahalo, Big Island ❤️
Our Big Island family getaway was not only unforgettable but we were left with full hearts. It brought our family unexpectedly closer through discovery and a shared sense of wonder. If you’re looking for a place where your family can unplug, explore, and truly feel the world, you won’t regret this island.
